About Us

Marfat is a registered non-profit voluntary association founded in 2004. Its core team consists of economists, social activists, doctors, academicians and communication specialists. Since inception its focus has been on the district of Murshidabad in West Bengal, which ranks amongst the lowest in India in terms of various socio-economic and developmental indices.

Marfat’s major field level intervention involves ensuring health, education and cultural participation of children engaged in household bidi-rolling industry from the perspective of child rights.

Other activities include cluster development of traditional silk weavers, capacity building of Panchayati Raj Institutions, promotion of secular traditional cultural ethos, designing of social communication campaigns and undertaking research work related to developmental issues.

Marfat’s activities and programmes are supported by various sources including Child Rights & You (CRY), the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal, National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD) and Loka Kalyan Parishad (LKP).

Our Vision

Equity, social justice and eco-friendly sustainable development are the keystones of our vision for a better world – a world that celebrates life in all its myriad diversity; a world where people’s voices make the decisions that shape their lives.

Our Mission

Marfat is a platform to ensure people’s participation as a vital component in the praxis of sustainable development. Marfat undertakes micro-level need based programmes and develops process modules for replication. Considering the fact that under-development is a result of a vicious cycle, Marfat seeks all round progress with an emphasis on understanding the underlying factors through intensive action-research. The organisation also promotes and facilitates people at the grassroots to develop their own solutions for development through judicious use of resources and promotes accountability at all levels. Marfat also endeavours for policy advocacy and uphold human rights as essential component of development agenda.
