Marfat is a registered non-profit voluntary association founded in 2004. Its core team consists of economists, social activists, doctors, academicians and communication specialists. Since inception its focus has been on the district of Murshidabad in West Bengal, which ranks amongst the lowest in India in terms of various socio-economic and developmental indices.
Marfat’s major field level intervention involves ensuring health, education and cultural participation of children engaged in household bidi-rolling industry from the perspective of child rights.
Other activities include cluster development of traditional silk weavers, capacity building of Panchayati Raj Institutions, promotion of secular traditional cultural ethos, designing of social communication campaigns and undertaking research work related to developmental issues.
Marfat’s activities and programmes are supported by various sources including Child Rights & You (CRY), the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal, National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD) and Loka Kalyan Parishad (LKP).
